PUPILS at Greenock's Glenburn School have struck gold in a national award scheme.

They received the top accolade in the Caledonian Award, which is designed specifically for young people with additional support needs.

Fifth-year youngsters from the Inverkip Road school were presented with their awards by Councillor David Wilson, in the new Kilmacolm Community Centre.

They were accompanied by their PE teacher, Liz Gibson.

She explained that the aim of the scheme is to encourage efforts in a wide variety of activities.

Ms Gibson said: "The award encourages youngsters to develop their abilities in charity work in the school cafe, as well as through skills and pastimes such as art, music and drama."

Physical recreation is also part of the mix, with the youngsters taking part in basketball and swimming.

Ms Gibson added: "They also have the opportunity to improve their outdoor skills during a residential stay in Edinburgh.

"All of the pupils have worked extremely hard over the past year."

The youngsters - Stephen Coyle, Joshua Roberts, Lee Woods, Gary Docherty, Allan Foreman, Grant Hamill and Elizabeth Kincaid - were also praised by Councillor Wilson.

He was asked to present the awards because he has developed close links with Glenburn, which is a combined primary and secondary school.

The depute provost said: "It was an absolute pleasure to be asked by the school to do the presentation.

"They wanted to do it somewhere away from the school, and I suggested Kilmacolm Community Centre.

"Members of the public gave the youngsters a deserved round of applause when the presentations were made.

"This is a great compliment to the teachers and pupils.

"Achieving this award allows them to go on to do the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award in sixth-year."
