Greenock too clever for university
Greenock 2nds 3-1 Strathclyde University
GREENOCK Ladies 2nds turned out on Saturday to play Strathclyde University.
The visitors appeared to have changed their team members since Greenock's last encounter with them, but Greenock were not daunted by the task of taking on this team and within the first two minutes of the start were 1-0 up with a brilliant strike at goal from Caitlin Calder, pictured.
Greenock continued to apply pressure on Strathclyde by driving forward at every opportunity and within the first 10 minutes of the match had Strathclyde on the back foot.
The home side then had a period of some scrappy play through not releasing the ball early enough and being caught in possession.
This allowed Strathclyde to settle more into their game and they had a couple of shots at the Greenock goal. However these were calmly dealt with by the goalkeeper.
Greenock rallied and started passing the ball around the way they know how. A good build-up between the midfield and forwards saw Caitlin firing a precision shot past the Strathclyde keeper to put Greenock 2-0 ahead.
Shortly after this, following a driving run down the middle of the field, Julia Baldwin's first strike at goal was blocked by the Strathclyde defence. However the ball fell again to Julia who undercut the ball into the top of the goal putting Greenock 3-0 going into half time.
Facing the bracing wind in the second half, Greenock continued with their positive passing game and were unlucky not to be rewarded with any further goals, with a few going wide of the mark and a couple of saves from the Strathclyde keeper.
Greenock didn't have it all their own way as Strathclyde pushed forward, but they were thwarted by the Greenock defence, with Hannah McKay making some excellent tackles to break down Strathclyde play.
Strathclyde made it clear they were playing for foot fouls and were rewarded with a penalty corner following one inside the 23m area.
This attempt was cleared over the back line resulting in a further penalty corner which they accurately converted into a goal, bringing the score to 3-1.
Following this, Strathclyde were getting a bit frustrated by being closed down so quickly whilst on the ball and became quite vocal.
Both teams continued to fight to the final whistle for another goal but the final score remained at 3-1. Well done to Jillian, Hannah, and Julia for being players of the match.
Many thanks to Peter Robertson for umpiring at the last minute and to 20/20 Renewables and Texas Instruments for their continued support and sponsorship.
l Reports from the men's first and second teams will appear in tomorrow's Tele.
