Greenock 6-3 Monarchs

2020 Renewables Greenock Hockey Club Men's first team progressed to the quarter-finals of the Arthur McKay Scottish Plate with a 6-3 home win over FMGM Monarchs on Sunday.

Greenock had won the previous encounter between the two sides 6-0 in the league back in September, and the gulf between the sides was evident minutes into the match when an error from the away goalkeeper allowed Martyn Connor to open the scoring.

Greenock doubled their lead soon after from a penalty corner through Laurie McKelvie, pictured, after his initial shot had been saved by the away goalkeeper, and Jamie Terris had picked up the loose ball to provide the assist. Greenock continued to create chances up front but couldn't convert, and this cost them when a defensive lapse allowed a forward to break into the 'D' to slot the ball home, and Monarchs grabbed the equaliser from a penalty corner in the final moments of the first half.

Greenock re-took the lead at the start of the second half, McKelvie this time the provider when he set up Michael O'Hara.

Unfortunately for Greenock, the lead didn't last long when a Monarchs forward broke into the 'D' from the left-hand side, and although Scott Jones saved his shot, the rebound fell to a team-mate to tap in, despite the best efforts of David Brown on the line.

However this set-back seemed to galvanise the home side, and minutes later Laurie McKelvie scored his second goal of the match from another penalty corner to make it 4-3.

McKelvie then rescued his side at the other end of the pitch when Greenock were defending a penalty corner, by clearing off the line after Jones had parried the initial drag-flick off the crossbar.

It wasn't long before Greenock added a fifth goal through McKelvie, again converting a corner to complete his hat-trick, and he added a fourth goal late on to complete the scoring.
