Dumfries 2-5 Greenock 2nds

2020 Renewables Greenock Men's 2nd XI continued their recent good form with a 5-2 win away at Dumfries.

Greenock took the lead within the first 10 minutes from a penalty corner when David Rankin's miscued shot was deflected into the goal by a defender.

At the other end, a defensive mix-up allowed Dumfries into the 'D', but despite being unsighted by a team-mate, keeper Scott Jones managed to parry the ball round the post.

Greenock doubled their lead soon after again through David Rankin converting from another penalty corner.

Greenock added a third goal just before half-time through Andy Hair.

Unfortunately Greenock's performance dipped in the second half, with a series of defensive mix-ups allowing Dumfries a number of attempts on goal.

Greenock did however score another goal against the run of play when Andy Hair lashed home from the top of the 'D'.

Dumfries did finally manage to score on the counter-attack, after Greenock failed to convert a penalty corner, but their joy was short-lived.

Youngster Jack Pollock's shot looked destined for the bottom corner, but Andy Hair nipped in to get a touch on the ball in order to claim his first hat-trick of the season.

Dumfries grabbed a second consolation goal late on in bizarre fashion, when 'keeper Jones was judged to have deliberately obstructed play in the 'D', and the Dumfries forward converted the penalty stroke.

Despite a few defensive errors, Greenock will be pleased by a number of strong performances.

David Rankin and Andy Hair scored five excellent goals between them, youngster Jack McNelis put in another excellent shift up front, again highlighting his potential, and Rory Gorman's mazy runs from the centre of midfield had the Dumfries back four in all sorts of trouble.

Man of the match was Alan Heffernan for a fantastic performance alongside Gorman.
