A MAGNIFICENT young music maestro has hit the right note after earning a top award.

Talented teenager Kara Leck, who plays the bassoon, won the outstanding achievement prize at the West of Scotland Schools Training Band.

The 14-year-old, who is a third year pupil at St Columba’s High School in Gourock, loves playing the woodwind instrument and hopes to one day perform with an orchestra.

She told the Tele: “It feels great to win the award.

“I attended all the practices and they thought I played really well.

“Everyone talks about the flute or the clarinet but not many people know about the bassoon.

“When they get to hear it, they think it’s a good sound.

“There are only four people in Inverclyde who play the bassoon, including my tutor.

“It’s nice to play an instrument that is a bit different.”

Kara recently revelled in the chance to play with a school orchestra trust show at the City Halls in Glasgow.

She said: “My mum JayneAnn and my gran Ann cried when they saw me perform.

“It was a great feeling to play as the junior section that I’m in performed with the senior players and the symphony orchestra. I’d love to be in an orchestra when I’m older.”

As a result of winning the award, Kara secured a place in the senior band.

Kara said: “Usually you have to audition to get into the senior band but because I won that award I got a place.”

As well as her supportive family, Kara is keen to thank her tutor Victoria Scott.

She said: “If it were not for her, I wouldn’t have got here.

“Miss Scott always gives me new opportunities and through her I was able to perform at the St Stephen’s High School show Bugsy Malone.”
