CAMPAIGNING mum Gillian Mowat has been nominated for a national charity award.

The Gourock woman who ran the Tele-backed Glow Gold childhood cancer campaign has been put forward as a charity champion at Westminster by MP Ronnie Cowan.

Mum-of-two Gillian, pictured, launched the awareness-raising drive locally after her son Nathan, was diagnosed with leukaemia.

The pair inspired people all over Inverclyde to champion the cause and buildings were lit up in Nathan’s name throughout September.

Mr Cowan today praised Gillian for reaching out to help other people during one of the most traumatic times of her life.

The MP, who was a big supporter of the Glow Gold effort, said: “I know it has been a struggle but her upbeat, can do, attitude is infectious and she managed to persuade many local businesses and organisations to help promote child cancer awareness and even to illuminate their buildings with gold lights during September.

“During this time Nathan has been in and out of hospital and while always putting his treatment first Gillian has been a mum and wife and fundraiser, and always with a smile on her face.”

“At a time when most people would be consumed by their own needs and those of their loved ones, Gillian found it within herself to reach out and work to improve the situation for the wider community.”

Nathan, who recently turned six, was diagnosed with leukaemia two years ago.

Since then Gillian and her husband Paul have had to watch their son go through gruelling treatment.

They have also fought to give both Nathan and his little sister Annabel as normal a childhood as possible during the ordeal.

In the time since his diagnosis Nathan has started school, joined the Anchor Boys and he also enjoys playing football.
