A PAIR of Inverclyde schoolgirls are picture perfect after winning a prestigious art competition.

Olivia Devlin and Chloe Chalmers received medals and certificates for their natural history entries to the Glasgow Museums Annual Art Competition.

The girls, who attend St Columba’s High School in Gourock, were quick on the draw to beat thousands of other creative youngsters from across Scotland.

Principal teacher of art Monica Durning was swift to praise the pair.

She said: “It’s fabulous and I am very proud of their achievements.

“They are extremely talented young ladies.

“It’s great for them to be recognised in such a prestigious competition and we also had another seven pupils who were commended.”

Students from all over Scotland were invited to create a masterpiece from something they had seen in the museum, and the work had to be completed there.

Senior pupils from the school each spent a day at the museum and they were then invited to a glittering awards ceremony at Kelvingrove.

Silver medal winner Olivia, 15, who’s in fourth year, said: “I drew an orangutan in charcoal.

“It’s good to know you have been selected by external judges and not just by someone at our school.”

Fifth year pupil Chloe, 16, who received a bronze medal, said: “I painted a tortoise in watercolours. I’m proud of it.

“The award is good to put on my CV as I’m thinking of a career in art, possibly something in design.”

The girls’ artwork will be on display on the first floor of Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery until the end of November.
