GOUROCK quizmasters have come up with the right answer for charity - a cheque for more than £2,000.

DJ Paul Gallagher has been running the Thursday Q&A night at Monteith’s bar for the last eight years and has helped raise over £6,500 for Ardgowan Hospice.

He boosted that total further with another cheque for £2,000 from money collected in the last year to 18 months.

Paul encourages players to dig deep and donate what they can in between keeping them entertained with music, one-liners and the all important questions.

But the popular DJ, who is from Larkfield, takes no credit for the huge amount raised for the hospice and says it is all down to the generosity of the regulars who turn out for the quiz every week.

Paul told the Tele: “People come in and I ask them for a donation.

“Sometimes it’s a pound, a couple of pounds, a fiver or a tenner.

“It could be 50p, I don’t care.

“It doesn’t matter how much it is because it’s all for the hospice.

“Two guys, Douglas Middleton and Robert Simpson, have been to every one of my quiz nights.

“All the credit goes to the people who part with their hard earned cash, not me.”

Paul started off attending a quiz night in Monty’s in the early ‘90s and later took on the mantle of running it himself.

New landlord Dougie Campbell, who took over the business in September, heaped praise on the DJ and says he is delighted to keep the popular Thursday quiz night going – especially since it helps such a worthy cause.

He said: “I’ve known Paul for years and he’s a great guy, a really friendly guy.

“I had no hesitation in keeping the quiz night going as long as he wanted to do it.”

Quiz regular and Paul’s friend, Michael Gaffney, says the quiz is also an important social event locally.

He said: “People who are lonely come in and Paul doesn’t let them sit alone. He gets them into a team and they have a fantastic time.

“Paul’s got a great personality and has managed to do Ardgowan Hospice justice over the years with his wit, humour and ability to get people to put their hands in their pockets and dig deep.

“This is a tremendous amount.”

The quiz is on every Thursday at 9.30pm.
