A MURDER bid investigation is under way following a weapons fight at Greenock west station this morning.

It is understood that at least three men were involved in a serious incident at the junction of Newton Street and Nelson Street in the early hours which resulted in them all needing hospital treatment.

A spokesman for Greenock CID confirmed: "We are treating the matter as an attempted murder."

The Telegraph understands that the injured men are aged 42, 24 and 23.

Two remain in Inverclyde Royal Hospital, one having undergone life-saving emergency surgery to head and body injuries.

The other man has been discharged.

Police were alerted to the incident at 12.40am this morning and are appealing for witnesses.

The CID spokesman said: "We don't know if anyone else was involved at this stage.

"The inquiry is at an early stage and officers are currently being briefed.

"All three males sustained injuries and were conveyed to hospital.

"All of the injuries involved the use of weapons.

"We would urge anyone who can help with the investigation to come forward as a matter of urgency and contact us on the 101 number."
