A CAMPAIGN raising awareness of people with Down’s Syndrome by pupils at a Gourock school has been a real ‘sock-cess’.

Youngsters at St Ninian’s Primary took part in the ‘Lots of Socks’ appeal in support of P3 pupil Connie Dolan, seated far right, who has the condition.

The whole school sported their most outrageous and colourful footwear as part of World Down’s Syndrome Day on Tuesday March 21.

Those taking part included brother Zak, who is in P1, pictured far right, and P7 pupil Jude, third from right.

Jude said: “It’s a good thing to do because it raises awareness and it’s known worldwide.

“People just think you’re wearing odd socks but I explain to them it’s because with Down’s Syndrome there’s an odd chromosome.

“It also happens on March 21 because every other person has a pair of chromosome 21 but with Down’s Syndrome they have three.

“So that’s why it happens on the twenty-first day of the third month.”

Tuesday’s event was part of a range of activities taking place throughout Inverclyde and around the globe as part of World Down’s Syndrome Week.

St Ninian’s head teacher Lesley McCabe said: “We encouraged everyone in the school to have a conversation about Down’s Syndrome and three children identified family members with Down’s.

“It lets us celebrate everyone and the fact that everyone is different.”
