TWO talkative teenagers proved they have the gift of the gab at a national public speaking competition.

Rebecca Gordon and Kara Leck from St Columba’s High School in Gourock competed in the area semi-final of a national public speaking competition for schools, organised by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

The duo, who battled it out against two other schools, spoke on the subject of when the law should begin to treat children as adults.

Head judge Justin Farrell, assistant procurator fiscal for North Strathclyde, told competitors: “The standard of speeches, and the quality of the speakers, has been so high.

“A good public speaker is someone who can inspire, inform and persuade, and we have all been inspired by the speeches given, as well as informed and persuaded. You each deserve your place in the semi-finals, and you should all be extremely proud of yourselves.”

Rebecca and Kara put in a stellar performance but they were pipped to the post by pupils from Our Lady and St Patricks High School in Dumbarton.
