TELE cartoonist Tom Johnstone doffed his cap to an impressive array of Easter bonnets created by Inverclyde OAPs.

The artist and local history buff was the special guest judge at the annual Gourock Pensioners parade in Riverside Gardens.

Tom had a tough time choosing his top two such was the quality of entries but in the end crowned Rena McFadden the winner with Jenny Barbour the runner-up.

All entrants were presented with a large Easter egg in recognition of their efforts in designing their eye-catching bonnets.

Judge Tom also gave a talk at the pensioners’ meeting about the history of Inverclyde, particularly old Gourock.

Former councillor Jim Hunter, who runs the group, said: “We had a very good turnout. Tom’s talk was fantastic and he brought along old photos as well.

“One featured Gourock Rovers and one of our members, Ian Hamilton, was a player and was quite excited and pointed out the players.

“The bonnets were great and was won by Rena McFadden.

“Her hat was a lovely, wee hat and had a chicken on top.

“All the bonnets were so good.”

The next Gourock Pensioners meeting will be ‘Tartan Day’ tomorrow at 2pm in the Riverside Gardens lounge.
