WARM tributes were paid today to a late Gourock businessman who supplied ice cream and frozen food to outlets all over the west of Scotland.

Carlo Amadei passed away on August 14 at the age of 70.

He ran a business which started in 1921, when his grandfather, Domenico Amadei, arrived in Gourock from Barbarasco, Italy and opened the Picture House Cafe in Kempock Place.

After the cafe closed, Domenico established ice cream manufacturer Donald’s Cream Ices - the name coming from the fact that he was nicknamed ‘Donald’ by his Scottish friends — which is now thriving in Tarbet Street.

Carlo studied accountancy and then moved into the family business, which also began wholesaling frozen food 20 years ago.

He married Mary Bonnar of Greenock in 1980.

Their sons, Elio and Carlo, work in the business, and daughter Monica is a primary school teacher.

Carlo was a founding member of Ice Cream World, a union formed by 19 wholesalers throughout the UK which is credited with helping to preserve many small businesses.

His family said he was always there for help or advice if it was ever needed.

Elio said: “He was a very hard working, determined, proud man who cared dearly about his family. He had a unique sense of humour — his sharp wit and sarcasm will always be remembered.

“He will be sorely missed not just by all of the family but by his friends, colleagues and customers too. We have lots of happy memories of dad which I am sure will help us get through this difficult time.”

Carlo and Mary had three grandchildren, Arianna, Gabriella and Luca.

Elio said: “He enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved films, especially westerns, and continued working up until his death.”

Long-time family friend, former Provost Ciano Rebecchi, said today that Carlo had a great sense of humour.

Councillor Rebecchi said: “He loved meeting and talking to people, and was a proper gentleman.

“Carlo would do anything to help people.

“He was a great character. A lot of people will miss him.”

A vigil mass is being held this evening from 6pm at St Ninian’s Church in Gourock.

A funeral mass will take place there tomorrow at 10am, and Carlo will then be laid to rest at Gourock Cemetery.
