TEENAGER with a love of languages spent the summer as an au pair in Spain and ended up on television.

Megan Coyle from Wemyss Bay was always an enthusiastic student of Spanish during her time at St Columba’s High.

She got the opportunity to stay in Spain with a family during summer through her principal teacher Emma Donnelly, who knew she would fit the bill perfectly.

But Megan was shocked to end up in front of the camera in Mérida when she was asked to share her experiences with the Spanish audience.

Megan, 17, who lives in Wemyss Bay, said: “I couldn’t believe it when Mrs Donnelly asked me.

“I absolutely loved my time with the family.

“I looked after two little boys and they were lovely.

“It helped my Spanish so much.

“I have always loved learning Spanish and French.

“I hope I can go back to work with the family next year.”

The couple Megan stayed with, Pablo and Sara Gallego, work for public broadcast television station Canal Extremadura and soon had Megan in front of the camera.

Megan said: “They asked me to be interviewed on what it was like to be working and staying in Spain.

“It was a great experience.

“They asked me why I was there and about my life back home.”

Megan, who is from a family of five, is going to West College Scotland to study childcare.

She said: “I want to work with children who have autism.

“Two of my brothers have autism.”

Modern languages principal Mrs Donnelly hopes Megan’s story can show pupils that learning a language can lead to all kinds of opportunities.

She said: “It just opens up so many options.

“I met Pablo and Sara while I was in Spain 10 years ago and it is is lovely that a pupil has had this chance.

“I knew Megan would be perfect for this.”
