AN HISTORIC church which features the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh has had a £100,000 makeover.

Old Gourock Ashton, which dates back to 1832, is enjoying a new lease of life after two months of work.

Minister David Burt was delighted to share the results with the Telegraph.

He said: “We expanded the chancel area, refurbished the two side entrances and put in a disabled access lift.

“We have also updated the lighting and the electrics.”

Notable features in the church are the pulpit and choir stall panels designed by Rennie Mackintosh.

Mr Burt said: “We had to take advice before the work started.

“The old church has been repainted for the first time since 1984.”

World famous artist George Wyllie MBE, who passed away in 2012, was a member of the church and he gifted it a bronze sculpture in 2003.

There is also a special area seating area for the Darroch family called the Darroch Gallery.

Mr Burt says the church and parish has a proud heritage in the town.

He said: “Although the building dates back to 1832 as Gourock Kirk, there was a church on this site before then.”

People will be able to see the results of the refurbishment this weekend as the church is one of the venues taking part in the Doors Open Days weekend of September 9 and 10.
