A GOAL-DEN girl from Gourock has been picked to play football for her country.

Hannah McGeehan says it’s a dream come true to be selected for the Scottish Girls under 15 squad.

The 14-year-old has played the ‘beautiful game’ since she was a toddler and says it is ‘amazing’ to be called up.

She told the Tele: “I’ve played football ever since I could walk and when I was eight, I started playing with Ardgowan Boys’ Club and trained with them until I was 12.

“Then I trained with Morton Boys’ pro youth side and now I’m training with the Morton Ladies under-17 team.

“I think training with boys toughens you up.”

Hannah, who is in third year at St Columba’s High in Gourock, trains with the West region select and with the Scottish Football Association each week.

She said: “Through that, I went to a national camp with footballers from regions all across Scotland and from there the squad was selected.

“I enjoy everything about football, especially the social aspect.

“I’ve made good friends with the girls on my team and you get to meet lots of different people.”

Hannah, who is away at a three-day training camp with the national squad this week, thanked her mum Collette, dad Gerry, sister Orla, 12, and brother Philip, 10, for their support.

Lindsay McGurk, who is the head of health and wellbeing at St Columba’s High, says she is ‘delighted’ to see Hannah doing so well.

She said: “Hannah’s already had a long and successful career in football.

“She’s been through lots of different football pathways through her primary school, her club and right through to secondary school.

“Hannah works so hard and she’s so conscientious — she always goes above and beyond, especially in her PE curriculum.

“I’m sure we will see great things from her in the future.”
