A BRAVE Gourock breast cancer survivor has raised nearly £4k to help other sufferers.

Just months after undergoing cancer treatment Irene McArthur completed the Great Scottish Run 10k with her husband Brian, son Macaulay and brother James.

The determined 46-year-old, who is now cancer free, says she is overwhelmed by the support she has received from the local community.

She said: “It’s been fabulous.

“I’m so pleased how everyone has rallied around and raised so much money.

“People have been so generous, even strangers who don’t even know me have been donating.”

Irene, of Macmillan Drive, saw her world suddenly turned upside down earlier this year when doctors delivered the bombshell that she had breast cancer.

Throughout her treatment, she relied on the support of family and friends, and five months on, Irene has been told she is in remission.

She said that completing the run was an important milestone in her recovery.

Irene said: “We all wore t-shirts which said I had survived breast cancer this year.

“Other runners were stopping me and saying well done, telling me to keep going and that I looked great.

“It was quite an emotional occasion.”

Irene says her family have been a source of strength throughout her fight, especially spouse Brian and Macaulay, 18, who set up his mum’s Just Giving page online to raise money for the Breast Cancer Care charity.

She added: “When Macaulay initially set up the page, the appeal target was £500, but then it went up to £1,000 and donations just kept coming and coming.”

Irene is keen to thank everyone who donated, especially her colleagues at Texas Instruments and her husband’s work colleagues at Shell.
