POLICE today warned motorists are putting lives at risk by taking a short-cut - the wrong way down a one-way street.

Drivers have been warned police will be keeping a close eye on Davidson Drive in Gourock, above, where motorists have been saving time by driving in from the King Street end.

A Gourock councillor said he was "appalled" when he was informed of the dangerous manoeuvre by the Tele.

Councillor Ronnie Ahlfeld said: 'I"m grateful to the Tele for highlighting behaviour that could cause a crash or even lead to an accident involving children from the nearby nursery and Gourock Primary. I will be raising this with the police.'

The road was made one-way to make it safer when Gourock Primary was opened 10 years ago. But Davidson Drive residents alerted the Tele to the way the system was being abused by many drivers.

One said: 'We often see drivers nipping in from King Street instead of entering Davidson Drive by going around Broomberry Drive.

'We"re really worried the children at the school and the nursery could be put at risk.'

Sergeant Danny Godfrey, of Greenock police, warned drivers they face losing their licence if they are caught going the wrong way through the junction of King Street and Davidson Drive.

He said: 'This junction is clearly marked with "No Entry" signs. Driving through these into Davidson Drive is an endorsable offence, quite apart from the fact this is causing a danger to the public.

'We will give the area additional attention with traffic police as well as the community policing unit.'
