VANDALS: Damage at site.

VANDALS ran riot at the weekend at a beauty spot.

They trashed facilities at Lunderston Bay in the latest episode of anti-social behaviour at the popular site, which is part of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park.

The cost of making good the damage is not known yet, but it includes:

l seven portaloos vandalised

l fencing broken down and used for fires

l picnic furniture burned and vandalised

l 'Uncle Freddie's' shelter vandalised

l children's play area vandalised

l broken glass/bottles, litter, human excrement - and suspicion of substance misuse.

The vandalism was condemned today by Charlie Woodward, manager of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, and by Depute Provost David Wilson, who is vice chairman of the park.

Mr Woodward said: "This is not the worst instance of vandalism, but it is significantly more than the frequent and habitual low-key examples of anti-social behaviour at the site.

"This is a terrible shame for the vast majority of people who come here to enjoy themselves."

The vandalism occurred between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Councillor Wilson said: "This site is the jewel in the crown of Clyde Muirshiel Park. It is disgraceful that it should be vandalised yet again.

"The minority are destroying it for the majority."

He added: "It's especially disturbing that it should happen at the beginning of the Greenock Fair when families traditionally visit Lunderson Bay if the weather is good."

Mr Woodward said he would ask for help again from the council's anti-social behaviour team.

He said: "They have in the past visited the site to speak to youths to try to instill better behaviour."
