A FERRY was taken out of service for five hours after fears a fire had broken out on board.
The alarm was raised after passengers saw smoke coming from the engines of the MV Jupiter, shortly after it left Gourock yesterday at 12.20pm.
Crew members discovered the smoke was being caused by an oil leak, and the vessel returned to port for repairs before resuming service at 5.20pm.
A CalMac spokeswoman said there had been no fire on the boat.
He said: "Shortly after leaving Gourock for Dunoon, she developed a lube oil leak which came into contact with a hot engine casing.
"This caused it to smoke but we can assure passengers there was no fire.
"The vessel immediately returned to Gourock to have repairs carried out. No passengers or crew were injured in the incident.
"The Ali Cat was drafted in to cover and the MV Jupiter resumed service for the 5.20pm scheduled sailing."
