BIG-HEARTED Andrew Moore hopes to prove he's a cut above the rest - after pledging to have his long hair shaved off for charity.

The 20-year-old is set to have his 25-inch tresses completely sheared in memory of his girlfriend's late father, Kenny Burns - who lost his brave battle with sarcoma cancer eight weeks ago, just days after his 50th birthday.

Andrew has been growing his hair for six years, but decided to go for the chop to coin in cash for Ardgowan Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Both charities nursed Kenny, right, through his tragic illness.

The Morrisons supermarket worker, from Gourock, has already raised a whopping £815 - just £185 off his £1,000 target.

His girlfriend Rachel Burns, 20, has also been helping her family organise a fundraising gig in memory of her dad, who passed away on 22 November.

Andrew said: "Kenny was a special guy and I thought a lot of him. His death has obviously left Rachel and her family devastated so I thought it would be a nice gesture to try and do something to raise money for the charities which helped Kenny and the family."

After six years of growing his hair, Andrew will lose his locks this Sunday - and says he is nervous about daring to go bare.

He added: "I'm preparing for a cold head for the rest of the winter. I think I will look a bit weird at first, because people are so used to seeing me with my long hair.

"I probably won't get recognised in the street by people who know me, but they'll get used to it. I just think this is a nice thing to do for Rachel and her family. It's a great cause. They're fantastic people and I love them all dearly."

Kenny's family are also staging a special fundraising evening in his memory later this month. Northern Soul will take place on Saturday 29 January in the Loreto Club in Greenock. Tickets have already sold out.

If you would like to sponsor Andrew, log on to his Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/Andrew-Moore-20 and donate any amount to help him reach his target.
