INVERCLYDE has one of Scotland's youngest community councillors.

Malcolm Andrews, 17, has joined Gourock Community Council.

The sixth-year Clydeview Academy pupil said: "I've had an interest in politics for a couple of years. I've been one of two members of the Scottish Youth Parliament for Inverclyde since 2009.

"I'm also joint chair and co-founder of the Inverclyde Youth Council.

"I wanted to get involved with the community council in order to make sure young people had a voice at the centre of the community, as too often they are generalised as all being anti-social and not caring about their community."

Malcolm, pictured addressing the Scottish Parliament, said he also thought this was a good way to bring about more change within Inverclyde.

He added: "I would encourage everyone, young or old, to get involved with their community council.

"I hope to go to univerisity to study politics and then go on to have a political career."

Gourock Community Council chairwoman, Anne Williams, said they were delighted to welcome Malcolm.

She said: "We have been trying for a long time to attract the youth of the area to be involved. Malcolm has already attended our monthly meetings and has taken part in various civic and social events. Hopefully he will be able to bring the voice of our young people to the fore."
