THE head of the Jamaican Commonwealth Games team has hailed Gourock Golf Club as ‘one of the best he has ever seen’ after popping in for a round.

Major Desmon Brown visited the club during his stay for the Glasgow Games and he was overwhelmed by the course.

The keen golfer fancied a round in Scotland before he returned home and the local club was recommended to him by member Blair Harvey, who is also a Scottish Golf Academy PGA trainee professional.

Blair and club junior Daragh Cuddihy showed their special guest around and he was simply blown away by the hospitality, condition of the course and the breathtaking views it boasts.

Mr Brown said: “I can happily say the course is one of the best I’ve ever seen — the quick greens, the breathtaking views and also the club itself.

“Not a single member passed without saying hello, and the club professional, Derek Watters, was kind enough to take the time to chat with me about the course.

“My golf wasn’t great, but from start to finish, Gourock gave me a day to remember from my time in charge of the Jamaican Commonwealth Games team.” His comments were made in a letter of thanks to the club upon his return to Jamaica.

Everyone at the club is delighted with the praise.

Alan Knox, Gourock club captain, said: “Desmon initially approached the Scottish Golf Academy regarding a game and Blair Harvey, who is the PGA trainee professional at the academy, suggested he play Gourock.

“Major Desmon played the course with Blair and Daragh and then sent the thank-you message.” The Major has now extended a warm invitation to the players and club captain to join him for a round in Jamaica some day to return the favour.

Major Brown said: “I had an amazing time and was delighted I took my camera.

“The views were unbelievable.

“Having the head assistant professional from the Scottish Golf Academy taking me to his home course was something of a treat.” Major Brown also tipped Blair and Daragh for big things.

He said: “Gourock should be proud to have produced such a talented and determined young athlete.

“Though your professional golf career has just begun, I can see you are more than on your way to being a successful sportsman. Similar can be said for Daragh.

“He might only be 16 but he’s years ahead of that “He is a brilliant representative for Gourock Golf Club and I hope he continues to prosper after his recent junior club championship success.

“My greatest thanks go to Gourock Golf Club and also to Blair and Daragh for a wonderful day out. I hope I can return the gesture in Jamaica.”
