AN American singer will headline a live music event in Greenock tonight.

The Kowalski Club is back at Live @ The Loft on West Stewart Street later starring Glasgow-based band DopeSickFly featuring frontman and founder Ant Thomaz, who hails from Louisiana in the United States.

Following a storming set at the venue on Boxing Day the five-piece funk, hip-hop and jazz outfit return to Inverclyde due to popular demand.

They will be supported by Inverclyde musician Scott Beaton, who is back on home soil following two gigs in Los Angeles last year including one alongside rock icons Iron Butterfly.

Promoter Barry McIlvogue said: “After an incredible performance on Boxing night to which the crowd loved them, DopeSickFly will grace the stage again this week.

“It is my personal opinion that they are one of the most entertaining new music bands in Scotland. Also on the bill is local singer songwriter Scott Beaton performing songs from his solo EP which he recorded at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool.

“Scott played LA’s Whisky A Go Go club at the end of last year and will be touring with his band later this year.

“Come and check them out.”

DopeSickFly started last summer from the music of lead singer Ant who began busking in the streets of Glasgow with his fast-paced poetry before recruiting a band made up of musicians from across Scotland - lead guitarist Chris Darling, drummer Calum Macrae, Joe Djaelani on bass and bluesy backing vocalist Wendy Rae.

They have evolved his sound into a ‘neo jazz fusion’ with a mix of funk. Ant’s upbringing in Louisiana - the son of a single mum who struggled with poverty and lack of opportunities - forms the foundations of the band’s music. Prior to forming the band, he spent a few years playing his blend of hip-hop, R ‘n’ B and pop to sold out venues across the US.

Ant became a regular performer in New York’s East Village music scene and caught the attention of organisations including Billboard and ABC News. Doors open at 9pm tonight with a DJ until 1am after the live music and it’s free entry.

On Saturday, Live @ The Loft will host club night ‘Primo’ featuring new resident DJ Robbie Murdoch who has a wealth of experience from playing in Spain and all over the UK.

He will mix the very best house, dance and indie tunes every week from 10pm and entry is free.
