AN INVESTIGATION is under way after a man died in a house fire in Greenock early this morning.
The 60-year-old perished following a blaze at his home in Nicol Drive at around 2.30am.
Police and the fire service are now conducting a joint probe to establish the cause of the fatal fire.
Detective Inspector David Wagstaff, from Greenock CID, said: “At 2.30am this morning, the fire service were alerted to a house on fire at 9 Nicol Drive, Greenock.
“A member of the public was returning home from their work and discovered the fire.
“The body of a man has been found. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
“At the moment the scene will be the subject of a joint investigation with the fire service to establish the cause of the fire.
“We will also be carrying out a forensic investigation of the house.”
The body has yet to be formally identified.
