ROAD safety charity Inverclyde Phoenix Car Club held its annual fun drive-safe event – with more than 30 safety-conscious drivers taking part.

They were conducted by marshals through a series of tests ranging from questions on the Highway Code and general driving theory to manoeuvrability and hazard awareness evaluation.

Phoenix president Mike Etherington said the light-hearted event at Lady Alice Primary playground in Greenock also had a serious side.

He said: “Although marshals award penalty points for errors, this is very much a fun event where participants’ defensive driving skills are assessed in a light hearted manner.

“However, the tests have much more serious undertones.

“And these are to encourage entrants to think about their driving, show consideration for other road users and understand safety margins.”

Offering congratulations to all the award winners, he said special mention should go to the Joyce family, who had winning entrants spanning three generations – Phoenix premises’ convener Jim Joyce, his daughter Linda and grandson Callum O’Neill.

Vice President Robert Ingram added: “Thanks to all of the marshals, Phoenix Club members for all their hard work before, during and after the event, and to Lesley Caldwell, deputy head of Lady Alice school.”

Ladies’ section winner Linda Joyce also had the best overall score. Second lady was Jennifer Leith.

Top man was Callum O’Neill, followed by Sean Wilson and Jim Joyce. Callum also won the under-25s section ahead of Sean Wilson and Jamie O’Brian.

And Callum also received the Phoenix Members’ Cup.
