A FOOTBALL match will take place this weekend in memory of Greenock schoolboy Robbie Quigg to mark a year since his tragic death.

Coaches of St Andrew’s Boys’ Club, the team the six-year-old played for, will go up against a team of parents at Ravenscraig Stadium on Sunday to help raise money for the Brightest Star Foundation, which supports bereaved mums and dads.

It comes almost a year since Robbie, right, passed away after being knocked down by a car on Cumberland Road in Larkfield.

The match kicks off at 10am.

Robbie died on October 29 last year.

St Andrew’s president John Kennedy said: “It shocked and saddened everyone involved with the club.”

Robbie’s dad, Robert, is now coaching with the club and is expected to play in the match.

All are welcome to come along to the game.

Robbie’s mum and dad spoke to the Tele in August about their loss and told how they were determined to raise funds for the Brightest Star in Robbie’s memory.

They said they were planning a special charity night with all the proceeds from it going towards buying a family ambulance that will be big enough to transport parents along with a child who is being rushed to hospital in an emergency.

Michelle said: “We wanted to mark the anniversary by doing something for other people in a similar situation to ourselves.

“The Brightest Star has been a great help to us.

“They’ve been a great comfort and support to us all.”

Michelle said that assisting the charity was helping her cope as the anniversary of the tragedy nears.

She said: “You just get through every day but it seems to get harder all the time rather than easier. We’re trying to keep busy as the anniversary itself gets closer and closer.”
