TWO classmates are on red alert over road safety outside their school and set to drive home an important safety message to motorists.

St Mary’s Primary pupils Ellie Brooke McNelis and classmate Andrew Hunter organised a ‘come as you please’ day at the school with everyone encouraged to wear traffic light colours.

It was part of their ongoing road safety campaign, which urges parents to park responsibly outside the school.

Pupils were asked to make a £1 donation to wear their own clothes, with the proceeds going towards buying bumper stickers for mums and dads to display on their vehicles to help spread the message further.

P7 pupils Ellie and Andrew, both 11, are the St Mary’s road safety champions and determined to eradicate problem parking on double-yellow lines and zig-zag areas.

Ellie said: “We’re trying to tell people to stop parking on yellow lines and be safe. We are making sure they listen.”

The traffic light-themed dress day involved the whole school, from P1 through to P7.

Andrew said: “It was organised to get money for the stickers and to keep raising awareness of safe driving and parking.

“Some parents have listened but not all of them.

“That’s why we are keeping it going, to make sure the message gets out to everyone.”

Classroom assistant Margaret Wilson has been helping the pupils with their campaign and is delighted with what they have achieved.

She said: “It’s their job for the year as responsible P7s.

“They asked everyone to dress up in either red, amber or green and it helped raise awareness of the campaign.

“Quite a lot of parents have signed up already and we are trying to encourage more to join them and promote responsible parking and driving.”
