FLYTIPPERS brazenly dumped piles of rubbish in broad daylight in full view of people’s homes in Greenock.

Gareth McNeil said he was outraged to discover that a mountain of household items – including furniture, baby walkers, piles of wood and photo frames were abandoned on land off Drumfrochar Road.

The 37-year-old, who lives in Dempster Street, says he is disgusted as his kitchen looks directly out onto the land and the dumped waste.

He told the Tele: “At about 11.25am on Sunday morning I was making a cup of tea in the kitchen when I noticed a van on the land which I thought was unusual.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw the mess that was left - I can see it from my kitchen.

“It looks like someone has chucked out everything from their house. It’s disgusting.”

Gareth’s partner Louise Cockburn, 29, added: “It has ruined the landscape.

“There is a recycling centre at Pottery Street, why can’t they use that?”

The couple said they contacted the police about the incident and also alerted the council’s community wardens.

Inverclyde Council has condemned the people who made the mess.
A spokesman said: “This situation is disgraceful and there is no need for it.

"If someone has gone to the trouble of loading up a vehicle with waste, they are only a matter of minutes away from one of our recycling centres where it can safely and legally be dumped.

“It is particularly galling when the Inverclyde community are continuing to be among the very best area in the country for recycling.

“Unless the owner can be traced or the landowner pays for the clean-up, the cost of fly-tipping often falls on the council. This is a waste of money and means teams are getting diverted from other essential work.

"We would urge anyone with any information about who is responsible for fly-tipping to report it right away.
