ONE of Scotland’s finest traditional musicians is savouring the prospect of performing in Greenock this weekend.

Siobhan Miller releases her second solo album Strata today and will celebrate its release with a gig at the Beacon Arts Centre tomorrow.

The 30-year-old, who is originally from Penicuik, is a two-time winner of the prestigious Scots Trad Music ‘singer of the year’ prize and a former recipient of a BBC Young Folk Award.

She has also performed around the world and featured on hit TV series Outlander two years ago.

But the singer admits nothing beats a home audience and she cannot wait to perform in Greenock tomorrow.

She told the Tele: “I’ve been doing this since I was about 13-14, travelling abroad and in the last five or six years I’ve done a lot of work in Germany, Austria, Denmark and been to America.

“I love travelling and luckily for me that is what I do for the majority of my time, especially when I’m promoting a new album, which I am at the moment.

“One of the best things about that is getting out and performing the music to live audiences.

“There is something really lovely, however, about playing concerts kind of closer to your home. It’s nice to reach out to audiences that are more immediately around me.

“I have actually performed at the Beacon before in the Far, Far from Ypres show – I absolutely loved it.

“I’d never been in the theatre before until that performance and it’s an absolutely brilliant venue.

“I’m delighted to be coming back, it’s a brilliant space, really lovely.”

Siobhan has been based in the west end of Glasgow for many years since studying at the city’s Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Her new album features some of the country’s best-known traditional musicians, such as the legendary Phil Cunningham, and also pays homage to inspirational figures including her own dad, singer and guitarist Brian Miller.

Siobhan said: “It’s a collection of my favourite traditional and contemporary folk songs.”
