MORTON fans turned a charity match against rivals St Mirren into a family fun day and helped in the fight against cancer.

Match organiser Robert McCahill has thanked the club, sponsors and the players who pulled out all the stops to make the day a success.

They are set to raise £2,000 in total for Cancer Research and hailed it a fantastic event, despite the result going the Buddies’ way on the day.

Robert, 43, who drafted in ex-Ton favourites Alex Williams and Peter Weatherson to manage the side, said: “To be honest most of us would never get the chance to pull on a Morton top against St Mirren, so we were living the dream.

“We put old rivalries to the side to help a good cause.

“We went for a few drinks and some food with the St Mirren team after it.

“It turned into a great day with families and kids running about. We took up a good crowd from Greenock, there were about 200 watching.”

Despite the 4-0 scoreline the Morton side are not ready to hang up their boots yet.

Robert added: “We are definitely going to play again next year, hopefully at Parklea.

“It would be a great annual event, I think we will be better prepared next year though! I don’t think I’ll make it next year at 44, but maybe I could be Alex Williams’ assistant.

“Both Alex and Peter were brilliant.

“Most of the Morton fans in the team didn’t know each other before so it has been great and we are hoping to keep the team together.”

The Ton fans’ team would like to thank Morton,
sponsors McGill’s Buses and all those who came along on the day and made donations.
