A TASTE of the Great British Bake Off came to Greenock with a special charity cake competition.

Staff from Ardgowan Hospice led by example during the organisation’s ‘Go Yellow’ month, by holding a baking contest inspired by the colour.

The contest was judged by the hospice’s very own Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, volunteers Kenny Paton and Carol Bateman.

Quirky creations included an eye-catching M&Ms cake, yellow cupcakes and golden Victoria sponges.

But Michelle Burns from the fundraising department rose to the occasion with her winning Sicilian lemon and honey bee cake.

Judge Kenny said: “It’s one of the nicest lemon drizzle cakes I’ve tasted.”

All departments took part in the keenly-contested bake off and there wasn’t a soggy bottom in sight with the judges, followed by staff, devouring the array of delicious sweet treats.

Elaine McNeill, community development manager, said: “We as a team decided to do various activities because it’s Go Yellow month.

“We had the custard challenge, our yellow day and now the bake off.

“There’s been a real creativeness about it and a fun team spirit going by the amount of people who came to take part - and who doesn’t love cake?

“If anybody out there is thinking about doing something for Go Yellow then please get in touch with us as we would love to come along, see what’s going on and take part in their day.”

There will also be a Go Yellow coffee morning on Friday from 10am-noon in the hospice Access Centre.

Tickets cost £2.50 and are available at the door.
