MEET the Morton fans who are cheering on the Ton from one of the poorest countries in the world.

Malawi might seem like a million miles away from Cappielow.

But thanks to a goal-den bond with Inverclyde, a Greenock Morton Supporters’ Club has sprung up in the impoverished African country.

From their supporters branch in the Blantyre area, the second largest city in Malawi, the fans keep up-to-date with all things Morton via the Tele, which is sent out from their friends at the Inverclyde Malawi Schools’ Partnership.

Billy Paul, a retired teacher who volunteers with the project, says this is an example of the unbreakable bond Inverclyde has with Malawi.

He said: “When we were over in Malawi, we visited one of the secondary schools.

“They asked us what Greenock was like and we inevitably started talking about football.

“They spoke about the Blantyre Bullets, the football team they support and we told them about Morton.

“We thought it would be a great idea to support each other’s club and we suggested they could set up a club, which they were eager to do.

“We showed them copies of the Tele and they were really interested in Morton.”

The Inverclyde Malawi Schools’ Partnership has been running since 2007 and links schools in Inverclyde with counterparts in the Chiradzulu district in Malawi.

Over the past 10 years, the project has supported a wide range of projects including installing solar and mains electricity, provision of clean water, feeding programmes, supply of resources and sports equipment, building classrooms and teachers’ houses and now the formation of the Malawi branch of the Ton Supporters’ Club.

Billy said: “We keep them up-date with Morton through the Tele and use the ‘Whatsapp’ messaging service to send them results and keep them up to date with what’s happening.

“They also keep us up-to-date with the Blantyre Bullets - it’s great, as there’s a constant connection between Inverclyde and Malawi.”
