THIEVES smashed their way into a Greenock bakers — to steal a charity tin.

The break-in happened at Greggs between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Police were waiting outside the shop in West Blackhall Street when staff arrived at 5.30am.

This comes after a spate of break-ins in the street, with Sense Scotland and the British Heart Foundation shops being targeted.

Sense store manager Susan Dick said: “It’s shocking in light of what happened to us. Greggs were good enough to put a charity box and these are opportunists looking for a quick buck, just looking for money.

“It’s the lowest act ever to stoop so low to target charities who are raising funds for the most vulnerable in society.”

It is not known how much was in the tin at Greggs.

Sergeant Laura Stewart says the police investigation into the break-in is at an early stage.

She said: “Police inquiries are continuing.”
