A DEVOTED Greenock couple are marking a golden milestone.

Brian and Agnes Buck will celebrate 50 years of wedded bliss with a celebration along with family and friends.

The lovebirds tied the knot at Greenock Registry Office on October 6 in 1967 after meeting at the dancing.

She said: “We met in 1965 at the Palladium in Greenock, arranged to meet the next day and we’ve been together ever since.”

Agnes, 71, says her favourite song at the time was The Shirelles hit Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? — but half a century on the couple’s love is stronger than ever.

The newlyweds honeymooned in Cleethorpes, where Brian’s sister lived, and started married life there.

When their first daughter Moira was born, Agnes was keen to return to her home town.

She had various jobs, working at Playtex and in cleaning posts.
Brian and Agnes lived with parents until they got their first house in Walker Street and have lived in their current home in Roxburgh Way for the past 25 years.

They have had their ups and downs like any couple but that has brought them even closer.

Tragedy struck the family when they lost their second daughter Jacqueline at the age of only 25 back in 1996.

Jacqueline had only given birth to her son a few weeks before and had been suffering blood clots in her legs and sadly died of a heart attack after collapsing at home.

Brian, also 71, said: “We’ve been together for the good times and the bad. We’ve supported each other through thick and thin.

The anniversary is all the more special as Brian has not been in good health for many years.

He worked as a cable jointer with the electricity board for more than 20 years.

Brian says he feels that breathing in fumes from the job resulted in asthma and he has suffered heart problems.

He said: “I’ve got four stents and a pacemaker and I’ve been in and out of hospital.

“We’re thankful that we’ve reached 50 years and we’re still together.”

The couple have also been blessed with six grandsons and one granddaughter.

Agnes is no stranger to the pages of the Telegraph, having won our Mum in a Million competition 25 years ago.

Moira nominated her for the competition and she was delighted to win.

She said: “I was thrilled to bits. My sister and I won a weekend to a hotel in Inverness and we visited my other sister in Burghead.”

Moira also followed in her mother’s footsteps and hit the headlines after being voted Tele Woman of the Year in 2008 after raising £50,000 for charity.

Of her parents Moira proudly said: “They’ve had quite a journey getting there but now they are officially the golden couple.”

The family will toast the special pair with a meal at Cafe Balfe this week.
