A POIGNANT service to pay tribute to those killed in conflicts was held at the Garden of Remembrance in Greenock’s Clyde Square.

Local dignitaries joined veterans, youngsters from Greenock and District Sea Cadets and members of the public for the ceremony which was led by the Reverend Alan Sorensen on Saturday.

Provost Martin Brennan said: “We met in the grand corridor in the Municipal Buildings with representatives of various forces and our local sea cadets and then we went to Clyde Square.

“The Reverend Alan Sorensen delivered a sermon then we planted the cross with the poppies and we also planted white crosses with poppies on them.

“The service was very moving and quite a number of people who were passing by stopped to observe the two minute silence.”

After the ceremony, Provost Brennan, council chief executive Aubrey Fawcett and Reverend Sorensen went to Greenock cemetery to visit the memorial there.
