IT was love at first sight for this diamond duo who are celebrating 60 years of marriage today.

Joe Scott, 81, said he can remember the first time he saw his beautiful wife Cathy, 78, ‘as if it was yesterday’.

They started working together at the Lochore and Ferguson factory in Greenock back in the 1950s and love soon blossomed.

As they celebrate their milestone, the couple, who live in Kilblain Court, say their love for each other is stronger than ever.

Joe told the Tele: “When I came out the army, the first job I got was at the factory.

“I remember this wee lassie caught my eye — I noticed her instantly.”

Cathy added: “Joe had this lovely black curly hair.

“We then met at the dancing at the Palladium and that was us.”

The couple started dating and within less than a year they were married.

Cathy said: “I was 18 years old and Joe was 21 when we got married in the registry office in Wallace Square on the December 9 1957.

“We didn’t have much money so afterwards we just went up to Glasgow for dinner.”

After their wedding, the couple went on to have four sons and a daughter.

Their first house was a single end property in Dempster Street before they moved to a new council house in Fancy Farm.

To accommodate their growing family, the couple moved again to Davaar Road in Braeside and were there for 23 years until they downsized and moved to Ardgowan Street, before moving into their current home in Kilblain Court.

As well as being devoted parents, Joe and Cathy both worked tirelessly throughout their lives.

Cathy said: “The two of us worked in the Walker’s Sugar Refinery.

“Joe worked there for 23 years and I was there for 10 years. He then got a job as a sub contractor in IBM and I worked in National Semiconductor.”

The sprightly couple say their love for each other has got them through some hard times.

Joe has battled both prostate and liver cancer while Cathy has beaten breast cancer and has also had two knee replacements.

Joe said: “If it wasn’t for Cathy, I wouldn’t be here.

“She keeps me going and helps me in any way she can.

“She’s a wonderful woman.”

Asked what the secret is to their happy marriage, Cathy said it is simple.

She said: “You work through your problems. It hasn’t always been a bed of roses.

“We are the same as everybody else, you have your arguments but you just have to get on with it.

“You just can’t put on your coat and walk out the door.”

Cathy also joked that she has finally accepted Joe’s other woman — Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe, whom he saw perform while he was serving in Korea.

Joe laughed: “She was a goddess.

“I have been a fan from the minute I clapped eyes on her.”

Today, the couple say they enjoy spending time with their family including their six grandsons, three granddaughters and two great grandchildren.
