WORK on a new home for hero Greenock firefighter Andy Adams will start in the spring.

The news comes after councillors last week unanimously approved plans for a specially adapted bungalow for Andy in Gourock’s Kirn Drive.

Developers Merchant Homes say they are thrilled to be given the go-ahead and that work on the property will start soon.
A spokesperson from the company said: “We are delighted for Mr Adams and his family that approval has been granted.
“We look forward to getting started on the project.”

Councillors on the board approved the house despite a recommendation from planners saying it should be rejected.

Officials had said the house would ‘compromise public open space provision’ in the housing development.

Andy was left paralysed in August 2016 after a wall collapsed on him as he bravely tackled flames at a malicious blaze in a derelict social club building in Larkfield.

His long road to recovery has included re-learning basic skills of how to drink, eat and swallow as well as daily physical therapy sessions to improve his upper body strength.

Due to the extent of his injuries, father-of two Andy was unable to return to his own home after leaving hospital.

His fire service colleagues and the local community and beyond have been swift to help the popular local man’s rehabilitation and more than £117,000 has been raised so far for the Andy Adams Fund.

The dad-of-two has said that he is deeply touched by the support from the community and very grateful for the money raised.
