A TOP team of golfers from Whinhill swung into action to support the Provost’s fund.

Members presented a cheque for £1,000 to Provost Martin Brennan from funds raised through the Jimmy Lang Memorial Charity Gents Greensome Competition.

Mr Lang was one of the club’s greatest members and Gents Greensome Open Competition has been running for 34 years.
Gary Havlin, of the club, said: “During the past 33 years, tens of thousands of pounds have been raised during the playing of the competition, with money raised being donated to the Provost’s fund, for the Provost to in turn distribute out to needy causes in the Inverclyde area.

“Unfortunately this year was the tenth Jimmy Lang Memorial competition after Jimmy’s death in 2007 at the age of 86.”

He was swift to praise Mr Lang and his contribution, not only to the club, but also the wider community.

Mr Havlin said: “Most of those 86 years were spent providing sporting activities for others in the Inverclyde area.

“He served the local football community for over 25 years before serving the local golfing community as Match Secretary of the Whinhill Golf Club from 1970 right up until his death in 2007. In his role as Match Secretary of the Whinhill Golf Club, Jimmy was instrumental in the creation and running of many inter-club competitions, leagues and events.

“Jimmy’s popularity amongst golfers in the Inverclyde area, once again, ensured a strong turn-out.”

The competition was won by the team of Harry Coventry (Whinhill G.C.) and Jim Maxwell (Greenock G.C.).

Whinhill Golf Club would like to thank everyone who made the competition such a success, both competitors and sponsors.

Special thanks go to the main backers of the competition, Regency Stairs & Joinery.
