A GREENOCK woman turned a Royal Wedding garden party into a charity fundraiser in memory of her sister.

Val McFarlane organised the event to raise money for Ardgowan Hospice as a thank-you for their support for her family.

Her VIP guest list of family and friends turned up in their finery and fascinators to enjoy a fantastic celebration in the sunshine.

They toasted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, sipped bubbly, indulged in cream cakes and nibbled canapes for a good cause.

By the end of day they had raised an incredible £1,700 for the hospice.

The 51-year-old lost her older sister Sandra Mulryan to cancer eight years ago and wanted to show her support for the vital local charity.

Val, from Oakfield Terrace, said: "I lost my sister in 2010 and I wanted to do something to raise money for the hospice.

"The care and the support they gave my sister and my family were second to none.

"It is always on my mind and I wanted to give something back."

"Having a garden party seemed like a perfect way to raise money.

"Sandra would have loved it.

"It was a perfect day.

"I am overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone, every single person donated something for the raffle."

Around 30 family and close friends, Val's other two sisters Irene Lyons and Linda Campbell all joined in the festivities in her back garden.

Her son Stuart, who previously cycled from London to Paris to raise £5,000 for the hospice, kept the drinks and food flowing throughout the day.

Val, who works for Texas Instruments, said: "The Royal Wedding was just lovely.

"We had a great time too and I want to thank everyone who came on the day and supported us."
