New set of lights for A8
Another set of traffic lights are to be introduced along Inverclyde"s busiest stretch of road.
Councillors agreed to rubber-stamp plans submitted by Clydeport for a new distributor road to provide access to the James Watt Dock area ahead of a planned redevelopment of the waterfront by urban regeneration firm Riverside Inverclyde.
The proposals will see a new, two-lane dual carriageway, with a roundabout and traffic signals at the junction of the new road and the A8.
Speaking at a meeting of the council"s planning board on Wednesday, Councillor David Wilson aid: 'This is a significant junction and it gives an indication of the size of the development within the dock area.
'This will also allow access for the Tall Ships when they return and is something which I think is welcome.'
However, councillors agreed that, as the management of trunk roads falls outwith their remit, there was little they could do to prevent the introduction of further traffic signals.
Councillor Wilson said: 'One of the consequences of development will be more traffic lights.'
Strathclyde Police raised concerns about possible delays and parking issues, particularly on days when Morton are playing at home.
They also made reference to the potential impact on emergency evacuation procedures from Cappielow Park.
