A DEVOTED Inverclyde head teacher is stepping down after three decades of faithful service at a Greenock school.
Frances Gilpin is retiring after 30 years at the helm of Notre Dame High.
The school stalwart enjoyed every moment of her career in Greenock - and says she is honoured to have worked with Inverclyde youngsters.
She said: 'Coming to Greenock was the best move I ever made. I don"t think anyone could have had a happier working life. I greatly admire my staff and my pupils and the Notre Dame parents have been wonderful.
'The highlight has been working with the young people - it has been a privilege.'
Frances started her teaching career at Holyrood Secondary School in Glasgow in 1974 and moved to Notre Dame in 1979.
She worked as a chemistry teacher, assistant principal teacher of guidance, principal teacher of chemistry, assistant head teacher and depute head teacher before taking on the top job in 2001.
Frances, 58, will now spend her retirement pursuing more things she enjoys.
She said: 'I really want to get out more and see more of Scotland. I"ll also be spending lots of time reading, working in the garden and listening to music.'
On the last day of term, pupils staged a poignant "goodbye concert" for their head teacher and made sure it was packed with all her favourite songs.
Teachers performed sketches written by the pupils and young musicians and singers put in some sparkling performances.
Frances added: 'There are so many talented youngsters in Inverclyde. Teaching is now much more focused on the pupils, and head teachers are much more accountable. That is definitely the way it should be.
'I send every good wish to Notre Dame"s pupils, staff and families.'
