A WOULD-BE burglar was left with blood pouring from a gash in his face after breaking into two Greenock businesses.
Duncan Welsh needed hospital treatment after cutting his face during the bungled raids at Aulds Bakers in Roxburgh Street and Ninian's Hair Design in Inverkip Street.
The 24-year-old kicked his way through a glass door at the bakers where he stole some vouchers, a till receipt and a can of Irn Bru before heading to the hairdressers.
Fiscal depute Lindy Scaife told Greenock Sheriff Court: "He smashed a plate-glass window above the door and climbed through.
"He gained access but fell onto the shop floor and sustained injuries to his face, causing him to bleed profusely."
The shop was left covered in blood and glass, causing £1,000 of damage.
Once inside, Welsh stole a telephone handset and around £40 from the till.
Police found the thief sitting outside in Inverkip Street and arrested him.
He was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital to be treated for his injuries before being taken to Greenock police station.
Solicitor Gerry Keenan said: "It was not the most discreet of break-ins. He attracted considerable attention to himself and badly cut the bridge of his nose."
Welsh, whose address was not given, pleaded guilty to breaking in to Aulds and Ninian's on 8 May last year when he appeared at court on Tuesday.
Sheriff Rajni Swanney deferred sentence and called for background reports.
