CALM DOWN CALL: Community councillors Tom McKenzie and Irene Pollard with Lib Dem councillor Alan Blair and, left, some of the mess left behind.
SPEEDING boy racers are terrorising residents on the Esplanade and turning the street into a tip, it has been claimed.
Campaigners from Cardwell Bay and Greenock West Community Council say the teens are causing chaos by speeding along the street until all hours of the morning.
There are also complaints of loud music from vehicles and drivers sounding car horns continuously, while scattering a trail of litter on the pavement.
The community council believes the introduction of traffic calming measures would deter the drivers from causing havoc - and have now teamed up with a councillor to ask for speed bumps.
Tom McKenzie, chairman of the community council, said: "The noise nuisance and the mess these people are leaving behind is horrendous.
"At the weekend there, cars were still zooming about at 4.50am on Sunday.
"We feel traffic-calming measures at wee intervals, like the ones outside the Waterfront Centre, would stop it.
"For these youngsters their cars are their pride and joy - and they won't want the chance of their exhausts being damaged by driving over them at high speeds."
Meanwhile a nearby sheltered housing complex has also been affected, with yobs dumping all sorts of rubbish from their cars.
Sandra Jackson, warden at Seafield House, said: "We get bottles, cans and food containers thrown over the wall and into the gardens all the time."
Councillor Alan Blair said: "I have asked the roads department to look at bringing in speed bumps to try to deter people from this sort of behaviour."
