PILLOW WALK: Sandy.

EIGHT dedicated volunteers pushed a bed from Kilmacolm to Glasgow.

Landscape gardener Sandy Smith of Kilmacolm and seven others shoved the bed 25 miles to Yorkhill Children's Hospital on Saturday to raise money for its cancer ward.

Sandy, 58, is collecting cash to thank staff for helping children.

He has been raising money for charity for 40 years and said he has collected around £2 million for various good causes.

Sandy said: "We want to raise as much as we can for the Schiehallion Ward at Yorkhill."

Sandy has set up a charity called 'Bernard Iliff Children's Dream Trips of a Lifetime Campaign' named after four-year-old Bernard from Clackmannanshire.

He met Bernard while doing fundraising for CHAS, the Children's Hospice Association Scotland.

Sandy said: "Bernard is just one of the children whose life was saved by these fantastic people at Yorkhill."

Bernard sat on the bed for part of Saturday's push, blasting an air horn to help clear the way along the pavements. Sandy said: "We got a great reaction from people throwing money into our buckets."

Sandy was joined on the push by his son, Alan, Alan's fiancee, Lorraine Buchan, her brother, Joe Buchan, Bernard's sister, Daniella Illiff, Steven Barr, Joanne White and Willie Carroll, who is vice-chairman of the charity.

It took them eight hours to get to the hospital via the Kilmacolm cycle track, Bridge of Weir, Houston, Paisley High Street, Glasgow Road, Paisley Road West, Govan Road, Finnieston Street, Argyle Street and Old Dumbarton Road.

He said: "We had seven people pushing and had back-up vehicles, one of them containing Bernard's parents, Anne-Marie and Ray."

To donate, make out cheques to 'Yorkhill Children's Foundation Sponsored Bed Push' and send to Bernard Iliff Children's Dream Trips Of A Lifetime Campaign, Meadowfield, Whitelea Road, Kilmacolm, PA13 4HH. So far the bed push has raised £746.
