CRASH SCENE: The M8.

A COURT is to be shown footage of a high-speed chase that ended with two police cars ploughing into a motorway crash barrier.

Kieran Gray, 17, led officers on a breakneck pursuit through Paisley town centre, driving along a pedestrianised street and through a series of red lights.

After making it to the M8, the Greenock teenager - who was only a provisional licence holder - hit speeds of 90mph, before ramming one of the police vehicles giving chase, forcing it into the central reservation.

He then collided with a second police car, forcing it off the road and leaving both vehicles badly damaged.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard yesterday how the pursuit began in Paisley’s Mill Street after Gray refused to stop for officers attempting to pull him up for questioning.

He set off through Gilmour Street pedestrian precinct, causing members of the public to leap out of the way to avoid being struck, and shot through red lights at Moss Street, Old Sneddon Street, Niddrie Street and Abercorn Street, before the motorway chaos.

Sheriff Carol Kelly declined to hear a full narration of the facts due to Gray’s age and the serious nature of the offences, which he pleaded guilty to yesterday.

Sentence was deferred until September for background reports, when Sheriff Kelly will view CCTV footage of the incident.

Gray, of Neil Street, Greenock, was ordered to remain on remand at Polmont Young Offenders’ Institution, and had an interim driving disqualification put in place. He will appear again next month.
