THEM GREEN BOTTLES: Algae at Murdieston Dam.

FEARS the Murdieston Dam is polluted with toxic algae were confirmed today after Inverclyde Council issued an alert.

The Tele told earlier this month of residents’ concerns about the beauty spot after it filled with green sludge.

Council chiefs reassured the public the algae was ‘nothing out of the ordinary and happens every year’.

But they have now issued a warning for people to steer clear of the substance, which can cause rashes, vomiting and diarrhoea.

A council statement said: “People are being warned to avoid contact with toxic algae at Murdieston Dam.

“Testing of water at the reservoir and the neighbouring town reservoir showed the presence of blue-green algae.

“As a precaution, notices have been posted next to the reservoirs warning that contact with the algae should be avoided. The Greenock Model Yacht and Powerboat Club who use the reservoir have also been contacted.”

The council, which is responsible for maintenance of the Murdieston reservoirs, has had to notify the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde about the pollution.

Blue-green algae exists in fresh waters in Britain and it becomes noticeable when the concentration increases to form ‘blooms’ and scums which look like blue-green paint.

The algae can cause adverse medical effects.

Symptoms may include skin rashes, eye irritations, vomiting and diarrhoea, fever and pains in muscles and joints.

Toxic algae have in the past caused the deaths of livestock and dogs. Treatment of water supplies removes the algae and additional treatment may be applied to destroy or remove toxins.

The council says the action it has taken is precautionary and insists it will continue to monitor the situation.
