WIN: Ross and Gordon.

TWO talented Greenock brothers are really sticking together as they help steer Scotland to national hockey success.

Siblings Gordon and Ross McIntyre, of Lylefoot Crescent, both played starring roles as they helped the country triumph at the recent under-21 hockey European Championships in Austria.

Their gold medals followed victory in the Celtic Cup, and now Gordon, who skippered the side in both competitions, is celebrating again - after being selected for the senior Scottish Commonwealth hockey squad.

Gordon, 20, said: “We were out in Vienna for a couple of weeks and it was great.

“We were the favourites and got through by beating Italy, Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic, then Wales 9-0 in the final.

“Then on Wednesday I found out I’d been selected for the 16-man Commonwealth squad.

“I was quite nervous as the team had to be cut down from 18. It’s great to be included.”

Gordon heads out to Delhi at the end of September for the Games and is excited by the prospect,

He said: “We’re one of the lower-ranked teams and it’ll be a lot harder, but hopefully we can do well.”

Gordon started out with Greenock Hockey Club and now plays for Scottish champs Kelburne, while his brother is still with his home-town side.

Ross, 17, said: “I’d originally been in the under-18 squad this summer so it was great to go away with the 21s.

“We were expected to do well and there was a bit of pressure, but it wasn’t on me so much as I was younger.

“Gordon and the other guys helped me out a lot and it’s good all our hard work paid off.”

Ross will cheer his big brother on in the Commonwealth Games - but is also intent on following in his footsteps. He said: “I really want to make the 2014 team for the Glasgow games. I’ll be 21 then and at the right age for it.”

l Gordon and Ross would like to thank Sport Inverclyde, the West of Scotland Institute of Sport, Inverclyde Council and Strathclyde University.
