A SWIMMER collapsed and died after suffering a suspected heart attack at Gourock outdoor pool yesterday.
It’s understood the 57-year-old man had been in the water before he fell ill then lost consciousness.
First-aiders battled to revive the stricken victim as paramedics raced to the scene shortly before 2pm.
The man was rushed by ambulance to Inverclyde Royal Hospital but it later emerged that he had passed away.
One eyewitness told the Tele: “I saw the man standing at the end of the pool chatting to someone, and the next thing I knew he was getting CPR.
“I recognised his face because he’s a regular at the pool. It’s such a shame.”
A spokesman for Inverclyde Leisure, which runs the outdoor pool, said: “We can confirm an incident occurred at 1.54pm at Gourock pool, where a regular customer suffered what we believe to be a heart attack.
“Staff reacted to the incident and, shortly after, the ambulance service was contacted. The man was transferred to Inverclyde Royal Hospital.”
A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
