CRASH: The scene yesterday.

TWO women were taken to hospital after separate rush-hour smashes on a busy Greenock road.

Two of the three accidents happened less than a mile apart at rush hour last night, bringing traffic to a standstill.

The third bump took place on the A8 in the early hours of this morning. Police say they are trying to trace the driver.

Drivers faced lengthy tailbacks at tea-time yesterday as emergency crews dealing with the first two accidents battled to keep traffic moving.

Police and paramedics were first called around 4.45pm to a bump on the A8, close to the entrance to James Watt Dock.

Two vans and a car were involved in the collision, which brought the eastbound carriageway to a halt.

The 53-year-old female car driver was taken by ambulance to Inverclyde Royal Hospital with back and neck injuries. The van drivers appeared shaken but uninjured.

As police and paramedics attended the scene, a line of waiting cars snaked its way back as far as the Bullring roundabout at Dalrymple Street.

One driver said: “I was sitting for about 45 minutes. I left the town centre just before 5pm and almost immediately ground to a halt.

“It took me ages to move up the road, but by the time I got close to Cappielow I could see the blue flashing lights up ahead, though I wasn’t sure what had happened.”

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Just over an hour later, at 6pm, paramedics spotted a second smash from the window of their ambulance depot at Greenock’s Knowe Road.

They dashed outside to help as the two-car smash brought westbound traffic to a standstill.

A 50-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to Inverclyde Royal Hospital. Today, the nature of her injuries was unknown.

One witness said: “I was stuck in the tailback from the first accident when I saw an ambulance and paramedics at the second bump on the opposite side of the road.

“I wonder if the people driving down in the opposite direction were maybe looking at the tailback from the original smash.”

Sergeant Stuart Drake, of Greenock police, said: “Enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the accidents. Anyone with information should call us on 492500.”
